I get asked this all the time.
“What was the worst roach job you ever encountered?”

Well the one that I always refer to was one about 20 years ago.
I was servicing this Nursing Home that continually kept getting roaches at the Nurses Station!
I know that I had treated it thoroughly and new that someone was bringing in new roaches…only who?
Well surprise surprise… the Nursing Supervisor (who always kept her purse at the nurses station) asked me if I could service her home.
Ahhh Haaa, I thought to myself…but not to her…I have the culprit!
Well the following week I entered her home.
Her living room had white walls with a white ceiling with a brown crown moulding all the way around the room plus down the hallway.
Upon entering, I could smell the roaches! Yes..a bad infestation has a definite smell!
As I looked closer…I noticed that the crown moulding …which was about 4 inches wide…was actually not crown moulding…but German roaches nestled together!
At the time I thought to myself…Terry, we need a Bigger Boat! (Jaws reference)
I had never seen that many German roaches in a living room before and was thinking to myself..”If they are this bad in the living room…What about the kitchen!”
Well the kitchen was as expected…Millions!
You couldn’t put a can of soup on a shelf without killing a hundred roaches!
Every time that I opened a cabinet door a hundred roaches would drop and scurry across the floor!
The oven was a roach-hatching factory!
It was loaded with hatched out roach eggs, dead bodies and live roaches running around! Not to mention roach droppings all around including the oven door frame!
Everything hanging on the walls had hundreds of roaches behind it! Pictures, wall calendar etc.
The bedrooms were also bad! Roaches in the beds under the beds in the TVs, radio, telephones etc.
I remember it took me about 4 hours to service that home! Probably 2 hours just vacuuming up roaches, roach eggs and dead bodies!
My only regret is that I didn’t have a camera at the time to take a picture of that Crown Moulding

Lockers are a important place for your employees to safely store their personal items and food. The only problem is, without a proper Standard Operation Procedure these lockers become points of roach infestation!

Now these lockers look great but if you have many employees, chances are that at least one of them will eventually bring in a roach that can infest them all.

Lockers should not be used as permanent storage!

Employees should empty them at the end of every shift and leave unlocked so that they can be treated.

We have accounts that have lockers locked for over 10 years from previous employees and nobody has a key!

OK, I know I’m giving away my secrets…but I’m gettin old and have more Customers than I want so here goes.

When treating Patient rooms in Nursing Homes A good idea, instead of placing bait traps is to place a sticky monitor.

Reason? They both do the same job but the Monitor is superior because

1. It traps the pest and keeps it becoming visible

2. When you inspect- it lets you know their might be a problem if a pest is present.

The trick is to make the traps invisible to the rooms residents and guests.

Over the years and treating different nightstands I have found approaches that get the best results and also prevents The Patients items being “stuck” to the traps.

Also, the best thing for a Serviceman is that for every roach that is caught on a trap…means the less likelihood that you’ll be called back at a bad time for a callback!
Plus a little drop of Maxforce Magnum on the edge to help attract roaches also helps.

If the roach ate bait then in all likelihood he would expose itself and you would be called..

I get called for as many dead roaches as I do live ones!

OK, It’s 50/50 but we need the breaks!

Spider Control has a lot to do with Housekeeping and Maintenance of the surrounding environment.

To keep spiders out:

1. Keep all windows and doors sealed tightly.
2. Keep Shrubs neatly cut away from the structure.
3. Keep trees cut back from the structure and low-hanging limbs cut back.
4. Keep dead leaves and clutter away from structure.
5. Use “Yellow” Bug lights instead of bright white lights outside.
6. Move lighting away from building (Malibu Lights)
7. White Lights attract Bugs….and Spiders to your building.

When Spiders are seen inside?
So you see a Spider in a room and say to yourself… Call The Bugman.
Most Pest Control Companies DO NOT GUARANTEE SPIDERS so you are going to pay a lot of money when you could just vacuum up or step on the spider.

1. Vacuuming is best! Webs and spiders are gone safely with no chemicals!
2. Swat with a broom and step on spider!

*Spiders are not guaranteed mainly because the Spider itself has to be sprayed to kill it. There is no residual that will kill the Spider later like other bugs. Also, Pest Control Companies rely on you to keep your Facility clean, neat, sealed and your shrubs and trees cut back- so unless all your shrubs and trees are cut away from the building and all your doors and windows sealed- You will Never get a Guarantee and will continually have a Spider Problem.

Want to keep cockroaches out of Resident’s rooms?

When admitting them, check their electronic equipment like TV’s, radios, CD Players, telephones, etc.

If their previous home was infested…chances are they will bring their pests with them.

Easy solution!

Just turn the items over, check out the vents and open battery compartments for traces of cockroaches, cockroach eggs or droppings. Believe me, you’ll know if they are present!

WHAT TO DO?

Place items in plastic trash can liners and seal until your Service Tech can Treat them.

or

Have relatives take the items back and replace with pest free items.

But, If we treat them…the dried out roaches and egg capsules will shed onto the tabletops later and could cause a Health Code violation.

Health Inspectors write you up for dead roaches as well as live ones.

Better to get rid of Infested Electronic items.
